Ahmed Kelly's Rio Adventures!

 Hi everyone,

It has been a super productive 10 days here in Auburn, Alabama. I would briefly like to get you up to speed with some of the highlight since our arrival.

Leaving Australia was definitely adventurous! Every scheduled flight we had planned was delayed but none the less – we arrived safely! My checked in baggage went via Los Angeles, USA due to major flight delays so after arriving into Auburn a few of us had to wait just under 2 days before receiving our bags. Lucky I packed extra change of clothes and UNDIES! Hahaha However sadly for one of our staff member – their bag was lost and could not be tracked down! Very Bizarre.

General Overview:

Basically that was the only drama we as a team had encountered so far… Everyone in Auburn are very friendly and inquisitive of us as a team. There’s really not much here to see except the University’s sporting facilities. (That in itself is VERY impressive!)

We have been very fortunate to have full access of two 50m Competition sized pool (Indoors and Outdoors). The team was divided into coaching groups which consisted of 6 – 7 swimmers. In my coaching group, all the swimmers are very motived and these Paralympic Games will be their first. I’m looking forward to seeing them race on the big stage. Lots of great potential.

Team meeting and Athlete Activities:

As team we’ve held a number of team meetings over the last 10 days and allowed us all (Athletes, coaches and staff) to be informed on Rio, our progress, team goal, gold cap ceremony, hygiene reminders etc.

A big Athlete’s Activities was scheduled earlier on the camp so we could all create a strong team camaraderie amongst ourselves. There were lots of great laughs and talented acts. (We played a game which involved charades, play doh and drawing – Lots of fun)

Closing Message

Our team – your team, is just about ready to launch. We travel to Rio later this evening (Friday the 2nd, late morning/early afternoon your time). We are boarding the Red Eye (9.5 hours flight - overnight) from Atlanta to Rio!

Yes, it’s definitely getting real now! So the next time you’ll hear from me – I’ll be at the Paralympic Village!!!! Struggling to contain my excitement as I type the last line! However, my approach for these Games is to stay calm, cool and collective. So far it’s working a treat. I am missing my support network back at home but the team here are doing an incredible job to fill in the gap.

There’s only 5 days to go until you will all be watching the Opening Ceremony. A reminder that no swimmers will be attending due to our long competition program, (10 days!) Although, I am physically and mentally prepared for the competition week.
