Nationals 2015 Wrap

A busy racing season has come to an end with some excellent results for both the club and our swimmers.

Sydney was the place to be during April with the Australian Open and Age Championships running back to back at the Olympic Pool.

The Open Championships doubled as the the trials for the Australian Team for the 2015 World Championships, World University Games and the IPC World Championships.  Whilst the Australian Teams for the World Junior Championships, Commonwealth Youth Games were finalised from the Age Championships.

Mack Horton lead the charge at the National Open's winning 3 individual titles, kicking off the first final with a huge personal best time in the 400m freestyle to qualify for the Worlds in Kazan,  He continued his good form into the 800m which served as a great warm up for his main event the 1500m free. Mack recorded the 3rd fastest time in Australian History in the final of the 1500m free, with only the names of Grant Hackett and Kieren Perkins ahead of him. His time of 14:44.09 was an Australian All Comers record - so the fastest 1500m freestyle EVER swum in Australian waters.

Hayley Baker had the meet of her life, seemingly setting personal best times every time she hit the water. The first big result was a bronze in the 100m backstroke, then in the 200m back she stormed home in the final lap to position herself into the silver medal spot and claim a place on the Australian Dolphins team for the World Championships.

Koti Ngawati swam a brilliant race in the 200IM to win silver in a 2:11.96, but sadly just missed the qualifying time for the team, she later teamed up with Hayley, Chrissy Licciardi and Jenna Strauch to claim the National Title in the 4x100m Medley Relay.

The MVC Para swimmers were in great form with four qualifying for the IPC World Championships in Glasgow.  Tanya Huebner and Ahmed Kelly are experienced campaigners both having gone to the Paralympics before, but this World's team will feature two new faces in Monique Murphy and Ashleigh McConnell.  Monique secured her place with a silver in the 400m free and Ashleigh won bronze in the 50m back.

Tanya and Ahmed medalled in some of their favourite events - Tanya a bronze in the 100m breast and Ahmed in the 100 breast and 150 IM. Sadly their coach Brad Harris did not qualify on to the team despite having four swimmers on there, but his mentoring of these athletes has been outstanding.

Our girls also took a national title also in the 4 x 200m free relay with Koti, Molly Batchelor, Emily Moreton and Elyse Woods teaming up for a time of 8:18.52 to take gold.

Our Open medal tally finished at five gold, seven silver and three bronze and our point score was 809.5 - 252 pointsahead of 2nd placed St Peters Western, crowning us as Australia's Premier Open Club.

The baton was then passed to our Age swimmers - it was a long campaign for those families backing up from Open, but once again the spirit of our swimmers shone through.

Oliver Nash took the 'Ironman' award of the meet, winning four individual National Titles in the 100/200m fly, 200IM and the 50m free. In total we had four of our swimmers win win gold, with Elyse Woods in the 200m back continuing her amazing form from Opens to secure a spot on the Australian Junior Team for the World Junior Championships and Youth Commonwealth Games.
Sian Whittaker also won the 200m back and Theo Benehoutsos won the 400IM.

Along with Elyse, Mitch Davenport-Wright was also selected on the Australian Team for the World Junior Championships, it will be a busy year for Mitch with VCE as well.

There were a further 20 individual medals and a big win to our boys in the 14/u 4 x 50m free relay with the combination of Ollie Nash, Tom Hunt Smith, Jesse Coulson and Kyle Rodger claiming gold.  Add to this lots of 'Personal Best' times and valuable racing experience and all of our swimmers have something to be proud of!

Congratulations to our full team and their families that raced at the Australian Age Championships.  It is an experience you

will all remember for the rest of your lives!
